The Impact of the Sino-US Trade War on Corporate Vacancies: Economics
Tariffs are often advertised as an effective tool to protect or even create jobs in specific industries. Empirical evidence shows the difference. This column uses data from China’s online employment portal to record how companies facing increased US tariffs in the recent trade war posted fewer jobs and offered lower wages and other adjustments. China’s retaliatory tariffs have not systematically adjusted the company’s vacant positions. The winners of the trade war are still elusive, while the losers are on both sides.
