Mukul Rohatgi, SRK’s chief advocate, said SRK shed “tears of joy” after the son of Bollywood superstar Aryan was released on bail in a cruise ship drug case.
The former attorney general of India was pleading before the Bombay High Court, which on Thursday granted bail to Aryan and co-defendants Monam Damisha and Arbaaz Merchant. The three submitted to the Supreme Court after a special court refused to release them on bail last Wednesday.
The NDPS court, in its ruling rejecting the bail application, said that although the child star was not in possession, he was aware that Arbaaz, his friend, was carrying drugs. The court said it found this was “conscious possession”.
In a TV interview, Rohatgi said that SRK was very anxious for the three or four days he spent there. He added that the iconic actor has also been taking notes to help his legal team.
Aryan, Arbaaz and Monmon were arrested on 2 October after the DEA took them into custody following an alleged raid on a delirious party on a cruise ship.
Additional public defender Anil Singh, who appeared as an advisor to the National Central Bank, disputed the petition and said Aryan had been using drugs regularly for the past two years and had also been found “in conscious possession”. He added that Aryan’s arrest was not “unlawful,” as the defense attorney claimed.
Rohatgi argued that the NCB failed to prove a meeting of minds among the eight arrested from the cruise. He said there was no substance for conspiracy.
SRK has received an outpouring of support from his peers and Bollywood peers since Aryan’s arrest. It was reported that Sunil Shetty, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar called him after Aryan’s bail on Thursday. The likes of Malaika Arora Khan, Shanaya Kapoor, Swara Bhaskar and Hansal Mehta also celebrated bail through social media posts.
