To make diabetes treatment affordable, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) has set a price cap for 12 generic anti-diabetes drugs. Antidiabetic medicines also include glimepiride tablets, glucose injection, and intermediate-acting insulin solution.

“To enable every Indian to afford medical treatment against diseases like diabetes, the NPPA has started a successful move by capping prices for 12 generic anti-diabetes drugs,” the NPPA stated in a tweet.

The limit of one mL of (soluble) insulin injection of 40 IU/mL was set at Rs 15.09 and the price of a maximum of 1 mL of glucose injection of 25% strength was set at Rs 17.

Similarly, 1ml of Intermediate-Action (NPH) Injection Solution 40 IU/ml has a price cap of Rs 15.09, and the price for 1ml of Insulin Premix 30:70 Injection (Normal NPH) 40 IU/ml Injection is Also 15.09 rupees.

The price of the metformin 500 mg immediate-release tablet is capped at Rs 1.51 per tablet, while the 750 mg strength is capped at Rs 3.05 per tablet and the 1000 mg strength is capped at Rs 3.61 per tablet.

Price control also covers metformin 1000 mg controlled release tablet with a fixed cap at Rs 3.66 per tablet, Rs 2.4 per 750 mg tablet and Rs 1.92 per 500 mg tablet.

The NPPA was constituted as an independent regulator of medicines by a resolution of the Government of India dated August 29, 1997 as an attached office of the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP) under the Union Department of Chemicals and Fertilizers for drug pricing.
