WhatsApp has announced a list of Android versions for which it will no longer provide support as of Monday. The update means that users using these devices will lose their conversations if they are not backed up and exported yet.

WhatsApp also recommended that users with such devices switch to a device that supports it to continue using the world’s largest instant messaging service. WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta (formerly Facebook Inc), will continue to support devices running Android 4.1 and above. The messaging platform also supports the latest versions of iOS and KaiOS.

WhatsApp has updated its FAQ page and announced that it will no longer support devices running Android 4.0.4 or earlier. “WhatsApp will no longer support Android phones running OS 4.0.4 and earlier on November 1, 2021,” the company said on its updated FAQ page.

It advised affected users to switch to saving their chat history before the deadline and to migrate to a supported device. “Please switch to a supported device or save your chat history before then.”

“We provide support for Android devices that meet the following requirements: a) your Android phone is running OS 4.1 and above; b) your Android phone is capable of receiving SMS or calls during the verification process,” WhatsApp said.

WhatsApp has not specified which devices it will no longer support. Users can check the Android version of their device from the About Phone section of the Settings page.

Besides Android 4.1 and later, WhatsApp also supports iPhones running iOS 10 (iPhone 5 and later) and later, as well as feature phones like Jio Phone and Jio Phone 2 running KaiOS 2.5.0 and later.

“We offer limited support for Android tablets with an active SIM and not only support Wi-Fi devices. You will also need a data plan to receive messages when you are out of Wi-Fi range,” the WhatsApp FAQ page reads.
