The Kolkata Knight Riders failed in their attempt to win the Indian Premier League title for the third time here on Friday, but captain Ewen Morgan said he was “very proud” of the fight his men had after they went down and out during the first stage.

KKR lost the IPL top match by 27 throws to the Chennai Super Kings who clinched their fourth title in the process.

“We’re very proud of the fight we showed,” Morgan said after the final. “The character and the combat is a hallmark. The guys fought incredibly hard and performed.”

“Iyer and Gill were great. Ventakesh is new to this podium. They were the cornerstone of our hit. Tripathi left everything there for the day. Unfortunately, he had an injury.”

Morgan also said the team’s owners – Shahrukh and Finky – have been fantastic to support them.

KKR was impressive during the second leg of the IPL in the UAE, winning five of the seven league matches as they slipped into the play-offs by defeating defending champion Mumbai Indians on net run rate.

KKR coach Brendon McCollum echoed Morgan’s views.

“We are very proud of what all the players have done. Congratulations to the Super Kings, and their leaders. Just an amazing journey, and some things we can remember for a long time,” he said, reflecting on his team’s performance in the tournament.

“When you fall at the last hurdle there is always a sense of what will happen. The way the guys step up and perform – especially the young Indians. Big screams to the owners, they’ve given us tremendous support.”

CSK Editorial and Player of the Match Faff de Plessis said Indian cricket is blessed with talent.

“Gaikwad is a special talent. Indian cricket is blessed with talent. He is improving. He has a great and bright future ahead. I have spoken to him, but I don’t think he needs me,” said the South African, who scored 86 from 59 balls to help CSK in a 192 for 3.

“I am really grateful for today. It was also my 100th IPL match. I loved my time here. I spent almost ten years here – two seasons had a break. Number 4 in the cup locker is really good.
