The struggle for an individual of different abilities begins from the time they learn to face the world and how they make an effort to live in it. While hardships are an integral part of the normal lives of these individuals of different abilities, this kind of life is just another day that goes by which is totally normal. However, with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the lives of individuals with different abilities became more complicated due to the already existing conflict with their lives but also the external environment became more primitive as they were confined to 4 walls. All this caused many of them to experience social, emotional and even physical setbacks, which limited their access to many things that would have helped them change their lives. While many of them succumbed to restrictions, not all of them had the same fate as they and their families decided to fight for themselves and make a difference in their lives with the help of institutions like Narayan Siva Santhan. Ahead of International Disability Day, two of these individuals – 17-year-old Vishnu Luk Kumar from Nalanda and a 5-year-old boy from Uttar Pradesh – were an inspiration to all.
17-year-old Vishnu Lok Kumar from Nalanda lived a life different from that of an ordinary boy of his age. With both his legs deformed, Vishnu has already faced massive blows from which he has survived since his childhood. Vishnu and his parents, who came from a farming family, were not able to afford treatment and surgery on Vishnu’s legs to give him a normal life. One day, through various sources, his family came across the Ilizarov technique presented at Narayan Siva Santhan in Udaipur. The Ilizarov Technique is a cost-free corrective surgery offered to people with different abilities to make their lives simpler, easier, and empower them. Vishnu underwent his free-of-charge corrective surgery given by Narayan Siva Santhan at the Udaipur Campus. Vishnu treated one leg and made a full recovery 3 months ago. He decided to undergo this corrective surgery on the second leg. Vishnu says, “I have never felt so empowered. Walking without any support is a dream come true. Like me, there will be many who suffer due to these deformities which are an obstacle to lead a normal life. I urge many brothers and sisters to come visit Narayan Siva Santhan and undergo surgeries Corrective action provided by the NGO.
Another inspiring story is that of 5-year-old Ansh who hails from Uttar Pradesh. He was born with a leg deformity at birth due to damaged bones. Coming from a family with a poor financial background, Inch was unable to afford the expensive treatments offered on the metro. As a family member underwent free corrective surgery, Ansh and his family were led by a relative of Narayan Seva Sansthan. About 3 years ago, Ansh’s parents Renu & Hariram brought him to Narayan Seva Sansthan. After consulting Anch and his parents, doctors have now performed Anch’s surgeries with Ilizarov’s surgeries and treatments. In the past three years, they have witnessed a huge change in their son’s situation and are waiting to watch him finally get back on his feet.
Prashant Agarwal, President of Narayan Siva Santhan, said, “Due to COVID-19, many surgeries for people of different abilities have been delayed due to lockdown in different states and across the country. We at NSS believe in equity for all where all people can lead sustainable and empowered lives. We do.
