On Monday, a health official said that six people in Indore district of Madhya Pradesh were found to be infected with the novel coronavirus AY.4. According to the report received from the Delhi-based National Center for Disease Control (NCDC), six people have been found to be infected with the AY.4 variant of the coronavirus. Their samples were sent for genome sequencing with other infected people in September, Chief Medical and Health Officer (CMHO) BS Saitya said.

He said that for the first time in the last 19 months of the epidemic’s history, the AY.4 variant had been found. All six people found to have AY.4 have been fully vaccinated, Setia said. He added that they recovered after treatment.

CMHO said that more than 50 people who have been in contact with these six people in the past few days have been found to be in good health after testing. Meanwhile, Dr. Anita Motha, who heads the Department of Microbiology at Indore-based Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, said AY.4 is a new type of coronavirus and not much information is available about its severity.

A total of 1,53,202 COVID-19 cases have been found in Indore district so far. Among them, 1,391 people with coronavirus infection died. Indore remained the hardest hit area in MP when the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. However, due to the rapid pace of vaccination, the number of newly discovered infections has decreased to one or two per day.
