Six policemen were suspended for negligence on Sunday after cash worth 25,000 rupees was stolen from custody at Jagdishpura police station here, officials said. The police station’s home station officer was among the individuals suspended from work following the theft.
Additional General Manager (ADG), Agra District, Rajiv Krishna, said Rs 25 lakh were stolen from ‘Malkhana’ (the place where police store confiscated items) at Jagdishpura Police Station. He said the accident happened on Saturday evening. “Four days ago, Rs.24 lakh and 4kg of gold were recovered in a criminal case at the police station. Besides, there was cash in the warehouse from previous criminal recoveries,” he said.
“The gold and weapons placed in the warehouse are not missing,” the assistant general manager said. He said the station’s home officer, an assistant inspector, the chief editor and three policemen were suspended for negligence.
Directives were given to SSP, to investigate this case and work will be done on priority basis.” The police station noted that “Malkhana” was in a haphazard state after returning from morning tea on Sunday. When he checked the inventory, he found that Rs 25 lakh in cash had been confiscated. Missing from warehouse, Kumar said.
He added that CCTV footage and other records are being examined to identify the perpetrators. The police said that a case has been registered against unknown persons related to the incident, adding that an investigation is underway.
