One person died after a speeding SUV ran over twenty people in the Durga Idol immersion procession at Pathalgon in Jashpur, Chhattisgarh. The occupants of the car were arrested and 17 wounded people are being treated in two hospitals.

The sources told News18 that a huge amount of marijuana was found in the car that ran over the victims.

Ajay Yadav, IG, Jayshpur said the vehicle was driven by drug smugglers, who were transporting drugs from Odisha to Madhya Pradesh. He said that the two suspects were arrested and the police charged them with premeditated murder, adding that while one person died, 17 others were admitted to two hospitals.

Yadav said the Chhattisgarh Police’s CIA is under investigation for negligence.

Jashpur’s office was quoted by ANI news agency as saying that the accused were Pablo Vishwakarma and Chishupal Sahu, who were both residents of Madhya Pradesh and were passing through Chhattisgarh. She added that action is being taken against them.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Bagel responded to the incident, describing it as “sad and heartbreaking”.

The perpetrators were arrested immediately. Preliminary actions were also taken against police officers who appeared guilty. An investigation has been ordered. Nobody will survive. Justice will be served to all. “God have mercy on the deceased,” he said in a tweet.
