It was such a stunning show in Newtown that hundreds of lights-equipped courses were seen on the roads on Saturday to celebrate the pollution-free Diwali. Not only in West Bengal, the course will continue to run in eight districts along with Odisha and elsewhere in eastern India.
This is the third year that the course race has taken place with the lights and a message saying no to crackers.
Apart from Newtown, similar march will be held in Howrah, Hooghly, Bordwan, Siliguri and many other places. Bhawaneswar and Cuttack will also attest to this.
On Friday, the Calcutta High Court ordered a complete ban on the use and sale of all types of firecrackers, including green crackers, across the state during the upcoming Diwali and Kali Puja. Demand will continue for all remaining festivities this year, including Chhath Puja, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Environmentalists welcomed the order, with activist Napa Dutta saying the guidance should have come much earlier.
