Protesting farmers in Punjab blocked the movement of trains on Monday morning as part of the six-hour Samyukt Kisan Morcha protest on the ‘railroad train’ to demand the dismissal and arrest of Union Minister Ajay Mishra in connection with the violence in Lakhimpur Khiri in Uttar Pradesh.
SKM said trains will be suspended from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday during the Rocco Train protest.
A railway official said the protesters had closed down four divisions of the Firozepur division. The Firuzhipur-Vasilka district of Firuzhipur city and Firuzhipur-Ludhiana district of Ajitwal in Moga were also affected, the official said.
Demanding the arrest of Union Minister Ajay Mishra, the commission’s general secretary, Sarwan Singh Pandir, on Monday demanded that the KMSC would organize protests at 20 venues in 11 districts of the state.
In a statement, Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body for farmers’ unions that is leading protests against the center’s three agricultural laws, said that “the protests will intensify until justice is served” in the Lakhimpur Kheri case.
“To lobby for its demand for the dismissal and arrest of Home Ministry of Citizenship Ajay Mishra, so that justice can be served in the Lakhimpur Khairi massacre, Samyukt Kisan Morcha announced a nationwide Rail Roko programme.
“SKM made an appeal to its components to halt rail traffic for six hours on October 18 between 10 am and 4 pm. SKM demanded that this action be taken peacefully, without any destruction or damage of any kind to any of the railway property,” he said. .
Four of the eight who died in the violence on 3 October were farmers, a car carrying BJP workers allegedly fell. It was alleged that angry farmers then executed some people in the vehicles.
Among the other dead were two BJP workers and their driver.
The farmers claimed that Ashish Mishra was in one of the vehicles, a claim denied by him and Ajay Mishra who said they could provide evidence to show that he was at an event at the time.
Ashish Mishra was arrested in the case on October 9.
