A private hospital here has successfully performed an artificial heart transplant, said to be the first in Kerala, on a 61-year-old female patient. VPS Lakeshore Hospital said the doctors performed the nine-hour surgery, adding that the patient is safe and sound and is in recovery and undergoing rehabilitation.
“The left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a complex and rare procedure that needs good expertise and is currently being done by only a few centers in India. The device implanted on it is the HeartMate 2 (a second generation ventricular assist device),” the hospital said in a statement. .
A ventricular assist device is an advanced and unique mechanism designed to assist patients with heart failure. This mechanical pump is implanted in patients and helps the heart’s lower left chamber (left ventricle) pump blood from the ventricle to the aorta and the rest of the body.
The patient, who had been on treatment for dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) for the past six years, was admitted with cardiogenic shock, difficulty breathing, and hypotension on September 13.
“Since organ donation is in the stabilization phase in Kerala, a VAD (artificial heart) is a boon in the current scenario as a bridge for transplant as well as intended treatment,” said Dr. Sujith DS, cardiac surgeon at the hospital.
