Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and discussed the situation in the wake of torrential rains and landslides in the state. The death toll from floods caused by torrential rains and landslides in mountainous areas in two districts of Kerala rose to 23 as rescue workers pulled more bodies from under the rubble on Sunday.

“Talk to Kerala CM Shrivijayanpinarayi and discuss the situation in the wake of torrential rains and landslides in Kerala. Authorities are working on the ground to help the wounded and affected,” Modi wrote on Twitter. “I pray for everyone’s safety and well-being,” he said.

“So sad that some people have lost their lives due to heavy rains and landslides in Kerala. My condolences to the grieving families,” Modi said in another tweet. State Revenue Minister K. Rajan Rescue workers have retrieved 15 bodies from the rubble and snow of the landslides that hit various places in Idukki and Kottayam districts on Saturday.
