Andy Murray racked up two victories in several days of entertainment to defeat Rafael Nadal on the Spaniard’s comeback from injury at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships.

The Scot showed some classic touches with his 6-3 7-5 victory over old rival Nadal, who was playing his first match after recovering from the persistent foot problem that kept him out of the US Open.

He also missed Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics in order to rest his body so he could extend his career.

“Rafa and I have played many difficult matches over the years,” Murray said. “We’ve both gone through injury issues and it’s great to have the opportunity to be with him on the court again.”

More than five years after their last meeting, the two players made an impressive start, but the Scotsman’s excellent match training was said to have held a break point in the third game of the match and then broke himself to easily take the first set.

Nadal battled valiantly in the second set and saved a number of break chances, but Murray was in the first half at 5-5 before crashing out to secure victory in an hour and 50 minutes.

“It’s great to be back in competition, at the same time we haven’t played with each other for a while,” Nadal said. “I am very happy to see Andy playing at such a fantastic level.”

“For me, this is a comeback. It was not a bad match for me. After such a long time on a professional court, the feelings were very positive.”

Rublev defeated Canadian Denis Shapovalov 7-6 (7-5) 3-6, 6-4 in another semi-final match.
