Artur Petterbiev has vowed to prove himself as “the best”, and his latest victory could put him on an unexpected collision course with Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

Peterbiev maintained his brutal record of being the only world boxing champion with a 100 percent knockout record by stopping Marcus Brown on Friday night.

He was forced to survive a shock cut, which briefly tempted the referee to end the fight, to retain the IBF and WBC lightweight titles.

“We are ready for any fight,” he said of his future.

“We are ready for the best – to be the best, you have to beat the best.

“This wound is just another experience in my career.

“This is boxing and you never know what could happen.”

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has options in multiple weight divisions

Among the possibilities for pound-for-pound star Canelo is Beterbiev, whose options for next opponent go beyond the weight divisions.

Canelo is already a four-weight world champion and holds the undisputed middleweight title after a breathtaking 11-month stint where he finished the unbeaten records of three title holders.

He has received permission from the WBC to enter the Fifth Division and challenge Cruiserweight Champion Ilunga Makabu.

However, Beterbiev’s reputation as one of the most fearsome fighters in boxing makes him an outstanding candidate for Canelo to take on.

Canelo already entered the lightweight category once to knock out Sergey Kovalev.

. Top Rank member Bob Arum, who promotes Peterbief, said: Sky Sports That Canelo is interested in making the fight happen: “I know he will.

“He has expressed an interest in me.

“Some will say Beterbiev is very big and strong. Others will say Canelo is special and he can handle everyone.

“It’s one of the biggest fights in boxing.”
