Postseason college football is officially upon us.

There were 84 teams qualified for the championship this season, and thanks to the creation of the Frisco Classic, they are all bound by the post-season. This is the first time every team has finished 6-6 or better in a pot. The 2021-22 season is considered historic for other reasons as well. Cincinnati becomes the first group of 5 school to participate in the College Football Playoff, while Michigan will make its CFP debut.

The Bowl season will also be a chance for some of the nation’s best-overlooked players, like Western Kentuck’s Bailey Zappe, to finally gain exposure and fame. With famous players like Kenny Beckett and Kenneth Walker opting out of the New Year’s Six Bowls, more emphasis will be given to the smaller bowls as they become a more compelling consistency.

Middle Tennessee vs. Toledo

This is the second appearance in the Bahamas Bowl for both teams in the seven editions of the game. Middle Tennessee is coming off a regular season 6-6 without a distinct win, but is playing in its first game since 2018. Toledo went 7-5, with four losses by three points or less and all for teams qualifying for the tournament, including no. 8 Notre Dame. The Rockets have won four of their last five wins and three in a row before the game. They only made six turnovers all season.

Northern Illinois vs Coastal Carolina

Northern Illinois has one of the best stories in college football this year. The Husky went from 0-6 last season to 9-4 and the MAC Conference title this season. They are led by alum Thomas Hammock and pushed with one of the best running games in the country, averaging 234.2 yards per game and over 5 yards per carry, good for fifth in the state. The Chanticleers, seeded for most of the season, finished 10-2 after close losses to Georgia State and Appalachian State. Cheers are one of the most prolific offensive teams in the country. They are sixth in the nation in scoring and seventh in total offense.

Western Kentucky vs. Appalachians

Western Kentucky probably has the best players in the country that you’ve never heard of. QB quarterback Bailey Zappe is four touchdowns away from breaking Joe Burrow’s singles season mark; He conveniently averages four touchdown passes per game. Most of his passes are to wide receiver Gereth Stearns, the second best pass catcher in the country. The App State appears in the Sun Belt title match, losing to Louisiana for the second time this season. Mountain climbers have a Ranked win; They bothered then – no. 14 Coastal Carolina.

UTEP vs. Fresno

UTEP has qualified for the tournament for the first time since 2014 thanks to a transformation organized by coach Dana DeMille. The Mainers started 6-1 but finished 1-4. The only thing they have gone for is that they are one of the best teams in the country as they defend the 3rd position and are 9th. Fresno State got a huge boost when quarterback Jake Hainer, one of Mountain West’s top passers-by, withdrew from the transfer window and returned to the Bulldogs. It also led to Jeff Tedford’s return as head coach, giving him a brilliant attacking mind at the helm. The Bulldog has the ninth best passing attack in the country and ranks in the top 20 in many other major offensive categories.

UAB vs No. 13 BYU

The Blazers have qualified every year since returning to FBS after a two-year hiatus in 2017. This year, they finished 8-4, the fourth time in five years coach Bill Clark has reached an eight-game winning streak. Saturday’s win will be their first in a bowl since 2018. BYU has had one of the best seasons with what appears to be one of the least fair results. The Cougars went 10-2 with two separate sets of five games. They have beaten five PAC 12 teams, including seeded Utah and Arizona State. Kalani Sitake’s team might have had a convincing case for the New Year’s Six pot had it been ranked a place or two higher, which it apparently should have been.

Eastern Michigan vs. Liberty

One of the most surprising teams on MAC this year, the 7-5 Eagles are bowling for the third time in four years. Chris Creighton’s squad was the most disciplined in the country, with the fewest penalty kicks and the fewest penalty yards. That may be the key to Eastern Michigan’s eight-game winning streak, which the program last did in 1987. Liberty boasts one of the nation’s best quarterbacks for Mailk Willis, who is widely expected to be a first-round pick in the NFL, but Defense has been Flames’ calling card this year. They are ranked 11th in the country in overall defense and among the top 20 in sacks. One year Liberty was removed from the best season in the show’s history. It will move from an independent institution to the Conference of the United States of America in 2023.

Utah vs. Oregon

Another team with a great story is Utah State and its coach Blake Anderson. Anderson built Arkansas into a powerhouse from the Sunbelt before stepping down after his wife’s death. In his first season at Logan, the Aggies went 10-3 and won the Mountain West title while finishing in the top 20 in total attack and recording the third most tackles to lose in the nation. Oregon enjoyed a 7-5 renaissance, the Beavers’ first winning season since 2013 when Mike Riley was the coach. The Beavers went 5-4 in the Pac-12 game while ranking 12th in the best ground game in the country and sixth in the third down conversion ratio.

No. 23 Louisiana vs Marshall

The Ragin’ Cajuns had been one of, if not the supreme power of the Sun Belt for the past several years. They easily won the conference title this year and are ranked in the top 25 for the second year in a row. Their efforts under the leadership of Billy Napier impressed many people, including a few in Florida. Last month, Napier left Lafayette to take on the UF job. Louisiana is ranked 11th nationally in its defensive scoring and has the second best turnover margin. Led by first-year coach Charles Huff, Marshall went 5-3 in the C-USA game and 7-5 overall. The Thundering Herd had the ninth best red zone defense and 12th in sacks, ranking 10th in the country’s overall offensive standings and an average score of 34 points per game. They will be chasing their first championship win since 2018.
