Craig Richards included four never-before-seen players in England’s 20-man squad for Saturday’s women’s international match against France in Perpignan.

York City Knights duo Savannah Andrade and Olivia Wood will make their first international match after a season that saw the club qualify for the Challenge Cup Final and Women’s Premier League semi-finals.

Castleford Tigers co-captain Emma Lumley and St Helens winger Rachel Woese, one of 10 treble winners, could also make the bend, and coach Richards is happy to see them earn a chance with England.

“I’m glad we were able to name a bunch of new names in our squad for the France game,” Richards said.

“I was impressed by all four potential newcomers with their style and performance in the Betfred Women’s League, and it has already created a tough competition for places within the team.

“I hope we will see at least two international appearances next weekend in Perpignan.”

Andrade’s call-up comes after a tried-and-true season with the City Knights following her move from the Bradford Bulls, while Woosey has had a huge impact on Saints since switching from rugby union.

Meanwhile, Lumley was called up to the team to face Wales in June, but was ultimately not involved in the 60-0 win at Halliwell Jones Stadium.

The match against France is part of the men’s double-header and is their first women’s meeting since England’s 54-4 victory in Carcassonne in 2018.

“This is another big step on the road to the Rugby World Cup and another great opportunity for the players to prove what they can do on the international stage,” Richards said.
