The 2021 T20 World Cup is about to start – here’s everything you need to know ahead of the tournament…

When will it start?

The first round starts on Sunday with Oman against Papua New Guinea, followed by Scotland against Bangladesh. The Super 12 stage – featuring India, Pakistan, England, Australia and the West Indies – begins a week later on October 23, with the semi-finals scheduled for November 10 and 11, and the final on November 14. The final match has a reserve day in case of bad weather.

How does coordination work?

Eight teams take part in the first round – Ireland, Namibia, the Netherlands and 2014 champions Sri Lanka in Group A, then Bangladesh, Oman, Papua New Guinea and Scotland in Group B. The two sides play with the other teams in their group once, with the first and second places. Teams from each group reach Super 12.

The winners of Group A and runners-up in Group B will join England, Australia, South Africa and the West Indies in Group 1, while the winners of Group B and runners-up in Group A will advance to Group 2 along with Afghanistan and India. New Zealand and Pakistan. The top two teams in each group after Super 12 will reach the semi-finals.

How did the two sides make the first round?

Sri Lanka and Bangladesh qualified directly for the T20 World Cup after being in the top 10 of the T20I rankings at the cut-off point in December 2018 but as they were outside the top eight at that stage – ninth Bangladesh and 10th Sri Lanka – they were entered into the first round rather than automatically moving to Super 12.

The Netherlands, Papua New Guinea, Ireland, Namibia, Scotland and Oman took their places during the T20 World Cup qualifiers in the UAE two years ago, with the success of Papua New Guinea and Namibia meaning they reached the T20 World Cup for the first time. Ireland are making their sixth appearance, while Scotland are making their fourth appearance.

Where are the matches played?

The tournament has been moved from its place of origin in India due to the high number of coronavirus cases in the country and will now take place in the United Arab Emirates and Oman instead.

Group A matches will be held in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, while all Group B matches will be held in the Omani capital, Muscat.

Super 12 is a UAE game with matches taking place in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and Dubai. There will be a semi-final match for both of them in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, before the final takes place in Dubai.
