Nets star Kevin Durant’s Best Player campaign may be on hold for a while.

On December 18, Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that Durant had been placed in the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols.

Durant became the eighth member of the network to be placed in protocols, joining LaMarcus Aldridge, Da Andre Pimbri, Bruce Brown, Jevon Carter, James Harden, James Johnson and Paul Millsap. With eight players in protocol and sniper Joe Harris out while recovering from ankle surgery, the Nets used the NBA hardship exemption to sign three players.

Durant’s news comes on the heels of the Nets’ announcement that Kyrie Irving will be allowed to join the squad on a part-time basis.

Now, what’s next for Durant and the Nets? Here’s what to know about his condition in upcoming games.

Why did Kevin Durant get into the NBA’s COVID-19 health and safety protocols?

According to the NBA, a vaccinated player enters health and safety protocols after testing positive for COVID-19 or receiving an inconclusive COVID-19 test result. Since Durant has been able to play in home games, it has been confirmed that he has been vaccinated for COVID-19.

Durant’s result, whether positive or inconclusive, is part of a larger outbreak within the Nets organization, bringing the total number of players in the protocols to eight.

How long will Kevin Durant stay abroad?

If an NBA player tests positive for COVID-19, he must spend at least 10 days away from the team unless he returns two negative PCR tests within 24 hours.

Last month, LeBron James, owner Monk, and Russell Westbrook, of the Lakers, tested health and safety protocols and were back on the team in less than 10 days.

Will Kevin Durant play at Christmas?

Durant’s availability to visit the Nets at Christmas to face the Lakers depends on his time within health and safety protocols.

With Durant entering protocols on December 18, he will need to test the protocols so he can take the floor by December 25. If Durant is sidelined for at least 10 days, he will miss at least six days of his next Nets game.
