Michael Van Gerwin hopes to rediscover his top form and win the world title for the fourth time
It’s been a year when we forget Michael van Gerwen in Oshe.
The three-time world champion has not won a major title in more than 12 months; His longest dry spell since his hugely successful 2012 Grand Prix.
In fact, this is the first time since 2014 that he has entered the world championship and not in first place.
As he heads to Alexandra Palace this week, he seeks to capture the chip and collect the Sid Waddell Trophy to re-establish himself as the world’s number one darts player.
But he still has in his mind the best in the field.
When asked if he is the best in the world at the moment, he said, “Of course. They (Jerwin Price and Peter Wright) know the answer anyway. But they won’t say that.”
“[They know] It all depends on my appearance. If Michael plays his game, Michael wins the match. So easy. They wouldn’t say that, of course, if I was in their situation, I wouldn’t get it out of my mouth either. But it is a fact.”

Given his struggles over the past year, the 32-year-old says this world title would be the sweetest victory of his career.
“Of course it will be. I went through a really rough time, with a lot of things not going my way. I think switching to Winmau took me a really long time, but now there are no more problems about that.”
“Coronavirus, no fans, I’m a father again, they all get a little distracted. Sometimes you don’t have an answer for all of them. And you need to get back to basics and battle from there. That’s exactly what I see you did.”
“Sometimes when you’re at the top of your game like me, sometimes you can relax a little bit and take everything for granted. That’s not how it should be. I’ve done it a lot, but now I’m back on track.” And focus and that’s really important.”

And he feels his game is where you need to be to claim the title on January 3.
“If you look at the way the others have played, and their performance, I don’t think they have played better than me. So of course, yes, I think I can win it, otherwise I wouldn’t say that. My game is starting to get somewhere, and that’s what I like to see, I feel.” quietly.
“I’m looking forward to it. If you look at the past few months, the way I’ve played. It’s given me a lot of confidence. And yes, I’m looking forward to the performance, especially with the fans coming back again.”
“I feel good and I feel refreshed. I am looking forward to playing.”
He is indifferent to his third seed.
“It doesn’t really matter,” he said. “It’s just a number.”
“Look at Johnny Clayton. He’s won most of his championships this year, and he’s not ranked. So that didn’t really help him in the world rankings. Otherwise he’d be a much higher seeded!”
“Things like that happen. You have to adjust yourself to the actual moment. The actual moment is I’m playing some good darts, and I feel good about my game. From there, I think I can do damage in this tournament.”
