Newcastle have appointed former Reading and Celtic football manager Nick Hammond on a short-term deal as transfer advisor.
Hammond will oversee the January transfer window and has been tasked with bringing in players to help Eddie Howe’s side in their battle to avoid relegation from the Premier League.
Howe said last week that he is looking forward to working with the club’s appointees.
Hammond’s arrival is the club’s second arrival after Mark Leland from Liverpool in the newly created role as first-team coach’s analyst.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said the 36-year-old, who worked with Howe during his stint as Burnley’s manager, “was keen to take the next step in his career”.
“Mark has been here longer than I have been here and he was a very important member of our squad through his analysis after the match and the individual work he did with the players,” Klopp said.
“He was an outstanding man on top of that, but he had a chance of getting a higher role at Newcastle that we couldn’t offer here. He was eager to take the next step in his career.”
Newcastle’s search for a football director continues.
Alexander-Arnold’s amazing goal seals Liverpool victory
Trent Alexander-Arnold’s astonishing goal led Liverpool to a 3-1 win over Newcastle at Anfield and put the Reds back one point behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.
Jongo Shelvey’s superb effort from range (7) led the Magpies to a shock early lead on his return to his former club, but Liverpool equalized under controversial circumstances.
Diogo Jota (21) came home the second time out of the question, but Isaac Hayden was in the area, holding his head after he was caught defending a corner kick for Liverpool moments earlier. The Newcastle protests were understandable, but the goal remained.
“It was clear to me that Isaac came down holding his head straight away,” Newcastle coach Eddie Howe said after the match.
“In my opinion, the match had to be stopped. It had a huge impact on the match. We had the lead. I feel wronged and I feel it was doubly difficult for our players.”
