Tiger Woods has described his return to competing with his son Charlie as a “blast” in the PNC Championship, though he admitted he’s still coming to terms with his lack of stamina.

The 45-year-old has been undergoing extensive rehabilitation since sustaining serious leg and ankle injuries in a car crash in February, and Woods’ debut marked his first competitive start since playing in the same tournament last December.

Woods’ team made four birds in the opening five holes of the 36-hole scramble event in Florida and posted three more birds in the second nine, with 62 stealth free birds leaving them within three strokes of Stewart Sink and his son Reagan.

“Charlie and I enjoyed playing together again and playing with the Thomas family,” Woods said. “We’re very close, so it was a bunch of fun in there, and there was a lot of acupuncture all day.

“I wish I could walk with him and be with him every step like I was last year. Physically I’m incapable of doing that. So I was the guy who would go out there and get golf balls.

“It was different while trying to grab the bandwagon with him and talk to him and make sure we were there and still a team and still do it together. It’s a little bit harder when I’m on the bandwagon moving a bit or trying to go through the galleries.”

Woods lowered any expectations about his game prior to the event, as only the Majors or The Players were allowed to compete alongside family members, with the former World No. 1 golf cart used to roam the course and still getting used to playing 18 holes again.

“It’s frustrating when I don’t shoot as much as I know I can see shots that don’t come the way I want them to,” Woods said. “I hit two really good shots today – well, three times, they came out just like I wanted them to.

“In old numbers, but as I explained to you guys in the Bahamas, I don’t have the stamina. I haven’t played. This is, what, my fourth and fifth rounds all year. I don’t have any golf stamina.

“He’s tired out there, so it was a slow day. But that’s something I’m going to have, if I want to compete here at the Tour level, I’m going to have to get my stamina back and hit thousands upon thousands of golf balls. It just takes time.”

Woods had been playing alongside Justin Thomas, along with his father Mike, with the defending champions admiring what they saw from the main champ 15 times.

“In terms of hits and all that stuff, he [Tiger] “Not far,” said Thomas. But in terms of being competitive and going 72 holes several weeks in a row, yes, that’s a different story and he’s the only one who can answer that.

“I was very impressed with the speed he had and the shots he was hitting. At least from my perspective, it looked like a lot of moves and everything was there. He might think he wouldn’t hit her as much.

“But man, like these four irons he hit today, that was ridiculous. I looked at him and as soon as he sat in the wagon, he looked at me and smiled and I knew exactly that was the kind of shot he hits when he’s healthy.”
