Alex Carey will make his Australia Test debut at the opening of the Ashes Test after making sure he will replace ex-captain Tim Paine as share guard.

The 30-year-old, who has represented Australia in 45 one-day caps and 38 T20 matches, will be behind the logs at Gabba on December 8 after Payne announced he was taking time off from all forms of cricket for the ‘foreseeable future’.

After confirming his call-up, Carey said: “Debuting for Australia no matter where it is, it will be very exciting, yes, for me to do it in Gabba and in the Ashes series again, childhood dreams.”

Payne stepped down as captain after media revealed he had been investigated and acquitted over sexually explicit text messages sent to a former female Tasmanian cricketer in 2017.
